Strep A and Scarlet Fever

Scarlet fever is a contagious infection that mostly affects young children. It is usually mild and can easily be treated with antibiotics.

It is caused by a bacteria group called group A streptococci, which can cause other respiratory and skin infections such as strep throat and impetigo.

If bacteria gets into the blood, it causes an illness called Group A Strep, or Strep A. This is very rare, but it can also be very serious.

Cases of scarlet fever in the UK are currently (as of December 2022) higher than would be expected.
